The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) has just released statistics that should be alarming to all drivers. Increasingly, fatal wrecks across the United States involve drivers on drugs. Just last year a third of all fatally injured drivers were found to have drugs in their system. What is more concerning is that nearly 22,000 drivers killed in crashes were never tested for drugs and for 1,700 drivers tested, the results were unknown.
The big question now, is this a trend? In 2009 there were 3,952 deaths attributed to drivers on drugs. This is up 3% since 2008, and up 5% since 2005.
What people do not realize is the potential for danger when taking certain drugs. The drugs commonly found in these cases are narcotics, depressants, marijuana and steroids. According to NHTSA Administrator, David Strickland the "report provides a warning signal that too many Americans are driving after having taken drugs, not realizing the potential for putting themselves and others on the highway at risk."
The government has indicated that the findings only show when a driver has drugs in his system, not that the drug caused the driver to be impaired or that the crash was caused by drug use.
