FDA Recalls Children's Tylenol, Motrin, Zyrtec, and Benadryl

Posted on May 06, 2010

On April 29, children's and infant's versions of Benadryl, Zyrtec, Motrin, and Tylenol were recalled.  The manufacturers, Johnson & Johnson and McNeil Consumer Healthcare were the manufacturers of these pain relievers and allergy medications that have been called into question.  Both companies have taken responsibillity for the flawed products and have demonstrated their goodwill by recalling the drugs themselves.

What was the reason?  Fortunately, no illnesses or injuries have been reported at this time, but each one of these drugs does not meet FDA standards.  At this time, it is not specifically clear how each drug has been manufactured improperly, but the FDA's press release gave some insight into the problem.  In the press release, it was stated that some of the drugs contained too much of the drug's active ingredient and others contain inactive ingredients that do not meet FDA requirements.  Also, the latter does not meet testing requirements set forth by the FDA.

To fully protect your child, the FDA urges parents to discontinue use of these products immediately because we don't know what health risks these drugs may impose upon young infants and children.  This recall does not effect generic brands or off-brands marketed to work similarly to those drugs because all of those drugs have met FDA testing requirements and standards.

Once again, these drugs are not considered especially dangerous to your child's health at this time, but the FDA does not want consumers providing these four drugs to children, just in case.  Dr. Margaret Hamburg is one of the FDA Commissioners on this case, and she explains that "Americans deserve medications that are safe, effective, and of the highest quality."  The FDA is in the process of investigating both companies and the manufacturing processes they employed in making each drug.

However, if you have dosed your child with one of these drugs prior to this warning, and you believe that your child's health has suffered as a result, we urge you to take the following steps.
1. Take your child to receive proper treatment.
2. Report the problem to FDA's MedWatch by mail, fax, or online.  You can find there contact information by clicking here.
3. If you have additional questions for McNeil Consumer Healthcare, click here.
