The U.S. Food and Drug administration scolded McNeil Healthcare LLC for its slow response to problems at a manufacturing facility that caused consumers to become ill from tainted pills.
McNeil recalled the popular Tylenol Arthritis Relief Caplet last month, but expanded the recall today to include more 60 million bottles of medication belonging to more than 2 dozen different medications, including the brands Tylenol, Motrin, St. Joseph’s and Rolaids. For a complete list of the medications and to find out what you can do if you have one the recalled drugs, click here.
The arthritis caplets were recalled at the end of December 2009 after consumers complained of stomach problems. The complaints were linked to contamination by a chemical called 2,4,6 tribromoanisole (TBA). The TBA resulted from the breakdown of a chemical in the wooden pallets used to transport and store the packing material for the drugs.
McNeil Consumer Healthcare claims it is investigating the incident and it will no longer use the pallets that caused the contamination.
The contamination gives the medication an unusual musty smell. The FDA says McNeil first received reports of the musty smell in 2008, and that testing by the company showed the presence in TBA in September 2008. However, a report was not filed with the FDA until a year later.
