Kansas City, Missouri is testing the use of flashing stop signs to alert motorists at three Kansas City intersections. The signs, which cost $1,750 each have been placed at the intersections at: 51st and Oak, 18th and McGee Street and Swope Parkway and Meyer Boulevard.
According to Dennis Gagnon, of the Public Works department, these intersections have problems with drivers running the stop signs. The lights, which flash one flash per second on each point of the stop sign's tradtional octagon shape, will help alert drivers at these intersections. The signs are solar powered, so there is no drain on electricity to run them.
Today's driving has more distractions than ever with the use of cell phones, computers, GPS systems. The hope is the flashing lights will make these stop signs more apparent to drivers. Experts agree that using technology to help drivers is a step in the right direction.
After reviewing test results for these intersections, decisions will be made regarding adding more flashing stop signs to other intersections in the Kansas City metro area.
