Ford Developing Digital Children as Test Dummies to Prevent Child Injuries in a Crash

There have been a number of advancements in technology that have been used to protect motorists and passengers from serious injuries in the event of a car accident but so far there hasn't been enough done to specifically protect a child-- until now.  New technology being created by the Ford Motor Company may be on the right track to doing just that.  Ford has been working for over a decade to create simulated children to use in computerized crash tests.

These "digital children" have been specifically designed to make the computerized skeletons and organs as life like as possible in order to truly determine how vulnerable children truly are to injury and determine what can be done to protect them from serious injury in the event of an auto accident.

"We study injury trends in the field, and we know that traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for people from age 1 to 34," said Dr. Steve Rouhana, the Senior Technical Leader for Safety, Ford Research and Advanced Engineering. "We want to better understand how injuries to younger occupants may be different."
