Former NHL Player's Death Raises Questions on How League is Helping Players Cope after Injuries

Another former NHL player was found dead last week when Wade Belak was discovered in a downtown luxury hotel in Toronto, Canada, the apparent victim of a self hanging. The death is the third in a recent string of apparently unrelated deaths.

The NHL is concernced these deaths while not connected in a direct manner, may be related in that they are stemming from players having trouble dealing with injuries and recovery in a sport well known for serious head injuries.

"We are committed to examining, in detail, the factors that may have contributed to these events, and to determining whether concrete steps can be taken to enhance player welfare and minimize the likelihood of such events taking place. Our organizations are committed to a thorough evaluation of our existing assistance programs and practices and will make immediate modifications and improvements to the extent they are deemed warranted," a joint statement from NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and NHL Players Union executive director Don Fehr read.
