A lab explosion at the University of Missouri in Columbia sent four people to the hospital with severe burns. The explosion occurred on Monday around 2:20 p.m. on the third floor of Schweitzer Hall. According to emergency personnel on the scene, the accident was caused when they were doing an experiment with hydrogen and bacteria when the hyrdogen reacted and blew. The explosion caused seventeen windows to be blown out of the buidling as well a extensive damage to the structure itself. The four lab technicians who were working in the lab were all taken to the hospital for burn treatments. One of the victims suffered burns to the face and chest.
Columbia Fire Department Capt. Eric Hartman said, “Because lab personnel weren’t familiar with the warning system to alert that the hydrogen was reaching explosive limits, the gas was left on.”
