Who would have thought that a person could have survived a fall from seven stories? Especially when that person is a young child! As a matter of fact, a boy of only four years.
Well the impossible became possible earlier this week in Miami, Florida. There was a very young boy, four years old, and attending pre-school who somehow cheated death. The child was out on a seventeenth floor balcony when he fell off of the building. The young boy proceeded to fall for seven stories. His leap of fate was interrupted at the tenth floor of the building. At that point, his free fall was interrupted by a palm tree that was planted on the tenth floor of the building. This was the first thing to break his fall, and the boy would then land on an area of vegetation that acted as a final safety cushion.
As soon as the incident occurred, the mother of the child passed out with fear. But when she came to, she was informed that her son had survived and was being transported to the hospital. Not only did the little boy survive, but he survived the incident without any injury whatsoever. The little boy was still placed under medical surveillance, but sources confirm that he was more than okay, especially after he was provided with french fries to eat.
Obviously, this scenario is a fortunate fluke. Typically, a person--child or adult--would not have survived a fall from seven stories. Nevertheless, there is one expert who explains why this situation is completely normal for children. That doctor, Dr. Richard Snyder, explains that the younger the child, the better the chance they have of survivng a fall. Why? Dr. Snyder explains that young children are naturally and innately prepared to survive dangerous situations in several different ways. To begin, their bones tend to be softer. When the bones are softer, they can be moved more easily and are more pliable, whereas older bones are much harder and can snap and fracture much more easily than soft bones that are still developing. Another reason, is because young children tend to have more fat cells that cushion the vital areas. Adults tend to have less fat, and therefore, less cushioning.
Dr. Snyder also recalled similar, but long forgotten incidents. The most recent being in 2006 when a boy from Rhode Island fell three stories. And even earlier in 1993, a five-year-old also fell seven stories and survived, the only difference being that he fell from an apartment building in New York City and landed on concrete. Again, this last child escaped without so much as a scratch.
Yet not all children, and especially not all adults, are quite so lucky. At this time, it is unclear just how the child was able to climb over the railing or through it, but some safety measure was not in order. Or else this situation would never have occurred in the first place.
