Freezing rain during the St. Louis rush hour is being blamed for a 20-car pileup and multiple other accidents early Wednesday morning. The ice storm, which started just before 5:00 a.m. Wednesday morning, shocked drivers as they headed to work.
The 20-car pileup was on Interstate 64, near downtown St. Louis. Approximately 20 cars and two semis were involved in the accident. Unfortunately, as ambulances and fire trucks responded to the scene, they too became victims in the crashes.
According to fire Capt. Dan Sutter, 21 people were injured in the I-64 crashes, with one critical injury reported. Missouri State Highway Patrol Cpl. Jeff Wilson reported that troopers were sent to 60 accidents in St. Charles, Lincold and St. Louis counties.
