High School Science Experiment Injures Three, Gains Attention in Kansas City

In Lathrop Village, Michigan three high school students were hospitalized as the result of a science experiment gone wrong.  The child injury accident happened on March 8, 2011 at Southfield Lathrop High School as a science class was conducting an experiment mixing potassium nitrate and sugar.  If done properly the effect is to create a small smoke bomb.

Instead the mixture ignited and exploded sending off a small plume and scorching the classroom ceiling and sending debris flying.  Three of the 17 students in the classroom suffered minor injuries and were hospitalized.  The school was dismissed early that day to make sure there were no dangers due to the chemicals involved.
