In its third recall since 2003, Honda Motor Co., is recalling 2003 Accord and Civic models as well as 2003-2004 Honda Elements. The recall comes due to a problem with the ignition switch, which allows the removal of the key without the vehicle being in park. Honda reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that the defect with the automatic transmissions could cause vehicles to roll away and increase the likelihood of a crash.
The recall involves approximately, 197,000 Accords, 117,000 Civics and 69,000 Elements. The three related recalls involve about 1.4 million vehicles since 2003.
This latest recall was prompted when the NHTSA opened an investigation because of 16 complaints about the failure of the ignition interlock in 2002 and 2003 Accords. Eleven of the complaints alledged that rollaway crashes occurred due to the failure of the interlock system.
The recall will begin in late September with dealers switching out an interlock lever and pin within the ignition switch. Concerned owners should contact www.recalls.honda.com or call Honda at 800-999-1009, option 4 for more information.
