Independence Church Bus Crashes, Nine Children Injured

Posted on Jul 19, 2010

Last week, a group of children from all around the greater Kansas City area, and aged eight to fifteen years were returning from a Tri-City Ministries camp sponsored by their Independence-based church.  There were twenty-nine kids in total, and they were returning from Franklin County when they encountered the unexpected.

The kids were just riding along, when all of a sudden their bus driver made a hard swerve to avoid a crash with a road median.  When the bus driver attempted to readjust the bus, it became unstable.  Within seconds the bus had crashed and flipped over onto it's left side.  Half of the bus was still remaining on interstate 35 with oncoming traffic.  Fortunately, all other vehicles were able to avoid the bright yellow school bus.  At this time, it is unclear why the bus driver swerved in the first place, and officials expect that it will take another week or so to determine the cause of this dangerous accident.

As for the children, most of them are doing alright.  There were twenty-nine on board, and twenty were able to escape serious injuries.  But the other nine were not so lucky.  They suffered from a range of injuries including: cuts, bruises, broken bones, and severe feelings of pain in their spinal cord and pelvic regions.  Of those nine that were severely injured,  one had to be airlifted to Children's Mercy Hospital and was deemed to be in critical condition.  The other eight children were transported as well to receive treatment for their injuries.

The good news is that one of the officials from the ministry location in Independence reports to the Kansas City Star that all of the children are doing well.  He also shared with reporters that he did not expect any of the injuries to be life-threatening.

This incidence is also an awe-inspiring example of courage.  There were many drivers passing by the wreckage who noticed that there had been children on board.  Many of these drivers stopped, got out of their vehicles, and worked to free each of the twenty-nine children, the four teenage camp counselors, and the bus driver escape.  If it hadn't been for these helpful drivers, the situation may have been much worse than what it was.

Recently, we wrote on the psychological feeling of children after a traumatic event.  It is important to talk to your child about what has occurred, and if necessary, hire counseling services to make sure that your child can overcome any fears or feelings of anxiety in a healthy manner.

As parents, we have to trust our children to other adults just about everyday.  It is absolutely necessary that we be able to trust these individuals.  We do not know enough about this accident to state whether the driver was acting negligently, for all we know, the driver may have been swerving in the first place to avoid a potential hazard.  But if you believe that your child has suffered at the hands of an adult that was acting negligently, we urge you to give our law office a call.  Our Kansas City Child Injury and Accident Lawyers are committed to protecting children, and with over 15 years of experience, we can help you.
