At Lakewood Elementary School, a little boy almost lost his life while playing in a large inflatable toy. The toy was rented as part of a school carnival celebration that took place on the 13th of May 2010. Lakewood Elementary is located in one of the many suburbs that surround Kansas City. Now, this story has reached far beyond the surrounding neighborhoods of Kansas City. In fact, this story has been making headlines nationwide, and it serves as a sobering reminder of how seemingly safe products can present life-threatening scenarios.
What company provided this product? Fun Services of Kansas City. The company has confirmed that the product specifically used at this elementary school celebration was properly contructed and prepared. Additionally, the company maintains that every one of it's precautionary measures was adhered to by the employees and personnel that were monitoring the product and the children that were using it.
But the young victim must have acted against the norm. For some time, the child had gone unseen, and it is believed that he must have found his way into the inflatable device through an opening that would not allow Fun Services employees an opportunity to watch him. The company maintains that if the little boy had used the traditional entrance, he probably would not have found himself in a life-threatening situation. Regardless of whether this claim is true or not, the little boy is believed to have entered where two parts of the slide met. At some point, the little boy became stuck between the two parts and this resulted in suffocation. Fortunately, someone alerted an employee of Fun Services to the boy. Immediately he was sought out, but when found, the little boy was not breating at all. Emergency assistance was called and CPR was performed. The little boy was revived and now lives.
Point in fact, it is difficult for any competent adult to safely monitor children in these inflatable devices, because there are so many blind spots that one can miss. Thankfully, someone was able to save this little boy before it was too late, but this is not always the case. Moreover, anytime oxygen is cut off from the brain for long periods of time, their can be a tremendous number of long-term consequences to one's health. Most of those consequences are not recognizable immediately.
All products that are to be used by children should be child-proof. Like always, manufacturers of dangerous products and the people that oversee children at play with certain products should be held accountable when they do not consider every potential point of harm when using a product. If a child you love has suffered because of a situation llike this one, we urge you to give our law offices a call. The attorneys of Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys are committed to protecting children, and we will fight for the justice and compensation they deserve.
