Is Your Kansas City Child at Risk of Injury Because of Unstable Furniture?

The United States Consumer Products Safety Commision has issued an interesting report on child injury statistics around the home, stating many of these serious injury and fatal accidents are caused by falling appliances and/or loose or tipped over furniture. The CPSC estimates that there were 38,900 injuries from 2006 to 2008, and 242 deaths from 2000 to 2008, traced back to unstable or tip-over of appliances, furniture and TVs.

Most of these child injuries and fatalities occurred in residential homes, with just over 34 percent involving furniture-usually a dresser, bureau or chest of drawers-falling over.  The same report suggests that children between the age of 1 month and 8 years old were most likely to be fatally injured, accounting for just over half of all emergency room visits related to this type of child injury accident.
