Jury Finds State of California Partially at Fault for Crash, Awards $29 Mil to Victims

A jury recently awarded the family of the victims of a head-on collision a whopping $29 million claiming the California Department of Transportation failed to make the proper improvements to the highway to keep it safe.

The fatal auto accident happened in 2006 on Highway 12 in San Francisco, California when Nicola Bucci fell asleep at the wheel and went into oncoming traffic slamming into another car, killing two children and paralyzing another. The children's mother spent months in the hospital, recovering from severe injuries.

Bucci was sentenced to 23 years in prison for second-degree murder. Bucci had previously been convicted of manslaughter in 1994 after another crash he caused by falling asleep. This one killed two people.

Besides finding Bucci at fault for the deaths in the 2006 accicdent, jurors also found the California Department at fault for the fatal crash.
