Kansas and Missouri Farmers on Alert after U.S. Department of Labor Says Farming Accidents are Up

The U.S. Department of Labor has issued new statistics about work related injury that should have the attention of a great number of workers in Kansas and Missouri, as well as the rest of the midwest.  According to the new release, work related injuries and fatalities are on the rise in the farming community.  The rate at which a farmer suffers a serious or fatal work related accident is up to a rate of 39 injuries per 100,000 full time workers.  This statistic is well above that of other dangerous jobs such as being a firefighter or police officer.

There are dangers facing a farmer today that sometimes is beyond public knowledge.  Among the dangers are becoming trapped under over turned tractors; various injuries that can occur by using farming equipment such as combines and balers; silo and grain elevator accidents.

Overall the U.S. Department of Labor says there were over 4,300 work related injury accidents and fatalities in 2009.  Fishing tops the list, while the logging industry came in second with the most.  Farming and ranching accidents came in fourth on the list just behind airline pilots.
