Kansas and Missouri Concern Over Recent Medical Injury Findings

Posted on Aug 02, 2010

Recent research from Dr. Cunlin Wang and Dr. Brock Hefflin of the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is shedding light on the on the prevalence of medical device-related injuries that occur among children and teenagers.  Their team of colleagues and researchers have relied on figures taken from emergency room accounts given to the National Injury Surveillance System in 2004 and 2005.  From this source of data, they were able to determine that approximately 144,000 medical complications occurred as a result of devices used.  Averaging this finding between the two years of 2004-2005 demonstrates that at least 70,000 children are injured from medical devices every year, and unfortunately, this number does not cover the medical complications of children who were hospitalized and did not pay a visit to the emergency room.

Researchers were able to pinpoint the top 12 medical devices that cause serious injury to children.  And the first is part of a daily routine for many kids.  The number one medical device that causes 25% of these emergency room visits is, surprisingly, contact lenses.  For most, this would not be a first guess, but contact lenses are frequently misused or handled improperly by young kids, and when this occurs the altered and applied lense can cause corneal abrasions, infections, and other forms of injury to the clear outer layers that surround the eye.

The most serious of these medical device related injuries were injuries caused by medical devices that must be implanted in the body, an example of which would be brain shunts used to treat children who suffer from hydrocephalus, one of the most common American birth defects because it occurs in 2 out of every 1000 births.  Other serious medical devices of concern include chest catheters for chemo patients and insulin pumps for children suffering from Type I Diabetes.  These are the most serious medical injuries because they often result in terrible infections and even drug overdoses.  These injuries become especially complicated for parents and young children to handle because they will require extended medical treatment.

There were many others, but the most frequently appearing ones included needles that had broken off and become lodged in a patients skin, skin tears caused by gynecological exam tools, and ear tubes that can cause infection.

But the real question at hand is this: Could the prevalence of these injuries be higher in children because many of the medical devices that harm them are actually better suited for adults?  That same team of researchers headed by Dr. Wang and Dr. Hefflin are looking into finding an answer to this plagueing question.
