Kansas Approved Speed Limit Increase on 6 Highways Beginning on July 1, 2011

Posted on Jun 27, 2011

Beginning on July 1st, 2011 several Kansas highways will see an increase in speed limits to 75 mph speed limits, including three touching the outskirts of the Kansas City area. Recently, the state of Kansas announced where the increased speeds will be allowed. They are:

  • The Kansas Turnpike from Kansas 7 in Wyandotte County to the Oklahoma line.
  • Interstate 35 from a spot just east of the Sunflower/Edgerton interchange in southwest Johnson County to U.S. 50 east of Emporia.
  • U.S. 69 from 199th Street in southern Johnson County to north of U.S. 54 near Fort Scott in Bourbon County.
  • Interstate 70 from just west of Topeka in Shawnee County to the Colorado state line.
  • Interstate 135 from I-70 near Salina to a spot north of the 85th Street interchange in Harvey County.
  • U.S. 81 from I-70 near Salina north to Kansas 106.

The new law authorized the Kansas Department of Transportation to raise the speed limit to 75 mph on nearly 807 miles of Kansas highways.  Kansas is the 14th state to have a speed limit on the books of 75 mph or more. Just last month, Texas increased some speed limits to 80 mph on some roads and 85 mph on some state highways that are engineered to handle the faster speeds.

Some Kansas authorities doubt raising speed limits will increase fatality rates, saying that none of the states that went to 75 has reversed but a 2009 study published in the American Journal of Public Health found the biggest increases in highway fatalities were on rural and urban interstates. The study blamed 12,545 deaths and 36,583 injuries from 1995 to 2005 on increased speed limits.

"There is a direct correlation between speed and safety," Rader said. "When speeds go up, deaths go up. When speeds go down, deaths go down."
