Kansas City Concern Over Recalled Children's Tents

Posted on Jul 21, 2010

In 2008, a little boy passed away while playing in his own yard in Vinalhaven, Maine.  He was found caught in his little play tent, his neck trapped.  The little boy was just two years old.

It is believed that the child was playing as usual, and did not seem to be doing anything out of the ordinary.  Without warning, his head became stuck at the tent's base.  The part of concern is the clip at the top of the tent that attaches to the play yard.  The faulty clip can cause the heavier top part of the tent to fall down upon a child that is stationed below.  At the base of the tent there is a frame and a metal rod, inbetween which, the child's head was caught.  That is how this poor child was found, and it believed that these heavy tent objects obstructed his ability to breathe properly, and may also have caused further injury to his head and neck area.

This accident could have been prevented if the removeable clips that come standard with this line of tents had been stationary.  But instead, they were removeable.  When a child is able to remove those clips from the tent, the clipped parts of the tent will collapse and can obstruct an otherwise open area.  This obstruction can be too heavy for a young child to escape, and consequently, this may lead to suffocation and other injuries associated with the head and neck region dependent on both how heavy the falling objects are and the child's stature.

This shocking story made headlines for awhile but then disappeared for some time.  For two years these tents remained on the market.  These dangerous tents are called Tots in Minds tents, and they were especially popular because they were easily transported, collapsible, and widely available.  Approximately 20,000 of these tents have been sold to the American public.

We bring up this news story now because the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has officially issued a recall of this product.  But this recall comes with much concern because it is so late.  After a product has been bought, used, and tucked into a corner somewhere in your child's toy area, it is difficult to remember or even find these dangerous products.

The Kansas City Child Injury and Accident Attorneys of Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys certainly hope that none of these tents are still in use in the Kansas City area and neighboring areas.  But if for some reason you suspect that you may have one of these tents, we urge you to find that tent and check.  If you do in fact own one of these tents we urge you to report this to the CPSC immediately.  The company is going to replace the clips in the upcoming months, and they should be made available in the later part of August or early September.  If you would like more information on how to acquire one of these clips, please call (800)626-0339.

Our attorneys are committed to preventing child injury and accident situations such as this one.  If you believe that a child you love has been injured and he or she deserves justice and compensation, we urge you to give our law office a call.  We understand the difficulties presented by accident situations and we are prepared to help you.
