Jamie Hicks, 49, of Islip, New York was arrested on charges of Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) after her 12-year-old daughter called 911 to report that her mother was driving drunk. The daughter made the 911 call from the vehicle in which they were traveling. Also in the car was another child of Ms. Hicks. Hicks was recorded with a blood alcohol level of 0.18, more than twice the legal limit according to police.
Hicks was charged under a new law that makes it a felony to drive drunk with minors in the vehicle. She was arraigned and released on $2,000 bond. Ironically, this arrest comes almost a year after another New Yorker, Diane Schuler, drove the wrong way hitting another vehicle, killing eight. According to authorities she was under the influence of alcohol and marijuana, charges her husband denies.
