Two buses taking high school students to an amusement park were involved in a chain reaction crash with a tractor trailer cab and a pickup truck. A 15-year-old girl on the bus and the 19-year-old driver of the pickup truck were killed in the accident. According to authorities, the accident occurred when the tractor trailer cab slowed for traffic in a construction zone and the pickup truck rear-ended the cab. The first school bus, which was carrying all of the girls switched lanes in order to avoid a stalled car. The driver reported that she didn't realize the pickup truck had struck the other vehicle until it was too late to stop. That bus then slammed into the pickup and the second bus, carrying all of the boys, rear-ended the first bus.
The buses were transporting band students from St. James High School to Six Flags for a performance following a band camp when the accident occurred west of St. Louis along I-44. St. James is near Rolla, Missouri.
The driver of the pickup was reportedly the former reserve quarterback for the MU football team. Dozens of children were taken to area hospitals for treatment of mostly non-life-threatening injuries.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the accident.
