Caroll County, Georgia was the scene of a rollover accident involving a school bus on October 4, 2010. According to the Georgia Highway Patrol, a high school student was killed and 12 other were injured in the crash. The driver, a trainee for the school system, apparently veered off Highway 113, rolling the school bus.
In Georgia, as well as many other parts of the United States, school bus drivers are required to have special licensing in order to operate a school bus. School bus drivers are required to have a "passenger endorsement" indicated with the letter P on a license, and a "school bus endorsement", indicated by the letter S on the license. In this case, the driver, Kenneth Herringdine, had only the passenger endorsement, both on his paper license and his electronic record of his license.
School officials have indicated that Herringdine passed the school bus endorsement, but would not provide the documentation proving he was authorized to operate the bus. Herringdine was accompanied by a trainer, Sherry Davis, when the accident occurred. Both drivers were placed on paid administrative leave while the accident is investigated.
