A 4-year old boy was killed in an accident involving an escalator in a Sears Department Store in Auburn, Massachusetts on March 11th. According to officials there was a 6-1/4 inch gap between the up and down escalators in the Sears in Auburn Mall. That gap was just wide enough for the boy to get through. Unfortunately, that gap led to a nearly 18 foot fall, landing the boy on a display case inside the store.
Emergency crews quickly responded, and rushed the boy to the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, Memorial Campus. He was treated there for life-threatening injuries, but on Saturday the 4-year-old succumbed to his afflictions and was pronounced dead.
Two inspectors from the Massachusetts Department of Public Safety, who are responsible for inspecting the Sears escalators, have been suspended. Safety experts indicated that a barricade should have been set up between the escalator and the wall, which could have prevented this fatal accident. Investigations continue in this case.
