Kansas City Doctors May Limit Child CT Scans During ER Visits Due to Radiation Exposure

According to published report in the monthly journal of radiology, the amount of CT Scans ordered for children by ER doctors have increased by nearly 500% since 2005. The numbers show that the number of CT scans ordered for children increased from 330,000 to over 1.6 million between 2005 and 2008.

Part of the reason CT scans seem to be getting ordered more often is because the overall technology improved greatly over the past ten year. CT scans have proven to be very effective in helping to diagnose head injuried, headaches, neck and abdominal issues, but the problem is that every test comes with an unhealthy dose of radiation exposure and being exposed to these tests more than once can be dangersous, as the radiation can increase a patients risk of cancer.

One of the issues being looked at to make these machines safer for children is educating CT scan techs about making sure the machine is set for children. Most children are only given a CT scan in an ER as opposed to a pediatrician's office meaning the machine probably isn't set for a child. The problem is that the tests should be set up depending on the patient's height and body weight-- something that isn't always adjusted for children.
