Kansas City Moms & Dads Check Your Child's Booster Seat!

Posted on Sep 09, 2010

When choosing a car it is very important to keep safety in mind, and in doing so, we know which cars are typically ranked higher and which ones are considered almost unsafe.  But what about your child's booster seat?  It seems as though any booster seat is a safety prevention and a step in the right direction, but new results are suggesting that this may not be the case.

One research organization, The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), has been looking into the varying abilities of car seats to save your child's life in a car accident situation with simulated crash testing.

In these crash test simulations, dummies that matched the average height and weight of a child who should be fitted in a booster seat (one who is too big for a safety seat, but too small too ride with only a seatbelt protecting them) were placed in vehicles that crashed while driving at only 35 miles per hour.  Many of these dummies were thrown threw the windshield or collided with the dashboard.

And the results are...

Quite extensive!  For a complete list of the best, the worst, and the okay, we encourage you to visit the IIHS's website for yourself to learn about the adequate and superb car safety seats, but below we have listed all of the booster seats that were ranked worst:

Safety 1st Alpha Omega Elite (3-in-1 highback)
Safety 1st Allin-in-One (3-in-1 highback)
Harmony Baby Armor (dual backless)
Eddie Bauer Deluxe (combination highback)
Eddie Bauer Deluxe 3-in-1 (highback)
Evenflo Express (combination highback)
Evenflo Generations 65 (combination highback)
Evenflo Sightseer (highback)

However, just because you see your brand on here does not mean that your brand is unsafe.  Many of these brands also made the best list.  We encourage you to visit the IIHS booster seat safety page.

Why was this study conducted?  In 2008, as many as 700 children aged 12 or younger died in car accidents.  It is believed that nearly 40% of those deaths could have been prevented if the booster seats had been adequately designed to restrain a child.

In addition to that death toll, it is believed that even more could have been saved if they had been strapped into a booster seat.  Typically, children under the age of 8 need to be strapped into a booster seat.  In some cases where children are over the age of 8 but below the average height and weight projections for their age group, they may also need to be strapped into a booster seat.  If you are unsure of your child's need, most experts concur that any child under four feet, nine inches should be strapped into a booster seat.

If you believe that a child you love has been injured and is entitled to justice and compensation, we encourage you to call anyone one of our Kansas City Child Injury and Accident Lawyers immediately.  With over fifteen years of experience, the attorneys of Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys are well-prepared to take on your case.
