Residents of the Brookside neighborhood in Kansas City are concerned about traffic and parking at Southwest Early College Campus. Students from Westport High School will transfer to Southwest at the beginning of the school year following the closing of several Kansas City Missouri School District schools. Southwest Early College Campus is located at the intersection of Wornall Road and 65th Street, a busy stretch of road in the metro area.
Neighbors are concerned because busses are planning to pick up and drop off in front of the school on Wornall Road. According to Dennis Gagnon, the city works department is planning to reduce the speed on Wornall Road from 35 miles per hour to 20 miles per hour during school hours. In addition to safety concerns revolving around the busses and traffic, there are also parking issues. There is one parking lot at Southwest that is simply not large enough to accomodate the teachers and students.
Eileen Houston-Stewart, a school district spokesperson reports that 50-70 percent of the students utilize the bus system. The district is also reviewing other parking options, reviewing parking at a nearby church and a city parking lot.
