Kansas City Officer Involved Crashes Down Thanks to Driver's Ed

The results of an internal audit released by the Kansas City Police Department shows that the number of officer involved preventable accidents fell in 2009, following a trend that saw the statistic rise over a three year period before peaking at 147 in 2008.  Auditors attribute the declining numbers, there were only 97 in 2009, to a new regulation mandating that officers take driver's education and training courses.

Since the regulations kicked in, 580 members of the Kansas City Police Department have completed the intitial course.  In 2010, the KCPD reports only 19 preventable accidents through the first six months of the year.  It is believed the training courses conducted by the Police Academy are the sole reason for the plummeting numbers.
