Monday marks the first winter storm of 2011, and Kansas City road crews are actively working to keep metro streets safe for drivers. Both Kansas and Missouri road crews are focusing primarily on the major arteries throughout the metro area.
In Kansas City, Missouri, Mayor Mark Funkhouser reported that there was an additional $250,000 added to the budget this year for snow removal. To help keep up, the city now has 67 snow plows, compared to just 40 last year. The goal is not only to keep the major thoroughfares clear, but to add residential streets into the equation.
Kansas City, Missouri instituted Phase I of the emergency snow ordinance at 10:30 a.m. this morning. Phase I basically means that any vehicle that gets stuck on a major thoroughfare without snow tires will be ticketed. Phase II of the snow ordinance means that any vehicles parked along designated emergency snow routes will be ticketed.
In Kansas, the focus is the same - trying to keep ahead of the winter storm. Pubic Works crews have been out since the early hours of the morning and are working in 12-hour shifts. They are hoping their crews will be able to get to secondary roads and residential streets later in the day.
