A merger took place on Sunday to officially combine Mast Ambulance Services and the Kansas City Fire Department. Officials are hoping the merger will improve response times as well as reduce costs. One of the more notable changes to the public are the markings on the ambulances. They will all bear the Kansas City Fire Department logos.
The crews will all use a unified radio system which should streamline dispatches and other conversations. Between calls ambulance crews will be taking their breaks at fire stations, rather than parked at convenience stores or other public facilities in the metro area.
According to Fire Chief Smokey Dyer, eight or nine Mast managers lost their jobs due to the merger, but there is an expected overall savings to the city of approxmately $1.6 million each year.
