Man hospitalized after being hit by car driving on sidewalk in Topeka

A Topeka man was seriously injured after being hit by a car that was driving on a sidewalk in downtown Topeka on Tuesday morning.  The accident happened near S.W. 11th and Kansas Avenue in downtown Topeka.  Witnesses of the accident said the vehicle that hit the man was driving east on 10th street, then turned right, drove south onto the sidewalk, crossed the driveway between the buildings, continued south on the sidewalk, drove over the pedestrian, backed up, hit the pedestrian again before driving away.

The victim was taken to a local hospital, where he is undergoing surgery on his injuries.  Police have taken an 18 year old man into custody, who is believed to be the driver in the hit and run accident.  Topeka police believe alcohol was involved.
