Rumble strips on the side of Missouri highways have played a big part in reducing the number of auto accident fatalities caused by motorists driving off-road. Officials at the Missouri Department of Transportation say fewer than 250 people died from those kinds of accidents in 2010. According to MODOT, this number is down from 400 such fatalities in the 2005. Nearly 820 people died on the Missouri's highways last year, the lowest its been in the last fifty years according to MODOT.
The rumble strips help drivers see and feel where the edge of the road is when the weather is bad or when it is dark. Because of the sudden noise, they can also jolt drivers awake if they are falling asleep at the wheel and drift toward the edge of the road.
