The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is issuing a warning to all drivers to take extra care when traveling through work zones this year. Work Zone Awareness Week is being used to remind drivers of the dangers to workers and vehicles passing through these construction areas. In 2009 MoDOT reports that 13 people lost their lives in work zones. In the last decade 15 MoDOT workers lost their lives while on the job.
Because of the harsh winter weather, this may be one of the busiest construction seasons the Kansas City area has seen in quite awhile. The workers on these jobs are separated from traffic only by orange cones or barrels, which are hardly enough to stop a car traveling at any speed. The workers often get accustomed to the traffic around work zones, but never the danger.
MoDOT asks that drivers obey the posted speed limits, pay close attention when driving through work zones as the lanes change as work progresses, and to stay off cell phones.
