Mother Sues Florida Hospital after Nurse Cuts Baby's Finger Off

Posted on Apr 01, 2012

The mother of a Florida infant has filed a lawsuit against the Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center in Tampa, Florida. The law suit claims a nurse accidentally snipped her baby’s finger off with a pair of scissors. On October 9, 2011, the mother, Veronica Olguin, had taken her baby to the hospital with concerns of a fever. The 3 month old child was admitted for two days. During the discharge process, a nurse attempted to cut the intraveneous tube attached to the baby's hand and ended up cutting the pinky finger off the baby's left hand.

The nurse allegedly “rushed out the room screaming” as doctors attempted to save Selena’s finger. Unfortunately they were not successful.
The lawsuit is seeking damages in excess of $15,000 and names both The Heart of Florida Hospital and nurse Emily Anna Stutz, claiming negligence. The lawsuit claims that Stutz was negligent and failed to properly follow safety procedures. In addition, the suit claims that the hospital failed to train its employees on the proper use of scissors when removing intravenous tubes, and the hospital did not supervise the nurse properly.
