New Research Suggests Damage to Brain May Increase Over Time

New research being conducted at the University of Melbourne in Australia suggests that damage to the brain following head injuries can continue to progressively worsen over months rather than days as previously believed.  Dr. Terry O'Brien, the head of the Department of Medicine at the University, conducted research on animals using MRI and pet scans to track the progression of brain deterioration following a severe head injury.

The results of the tests suggest that there is a greater window of opportunity at the onset of injury and if the proper treatment is administered the long term damaging affects can be controlled and possibly reduced.

"We have demonstrated that changes in brain structure and function after traumatic brain injury are dynamic, and continue to progress and evolve for many months," said Professor O'Brien, "This study has also provided a platform for testing the biological effectiveness of potential new therapies before embarking on expensive and lengthy clinical trials,"
