It turns out that all that time spent working on and testing helmets may have been a waste. Helmets protect the skull well from being damaged, but it doesn't stop the brain from moving around in the cerebral fluids, liquid, and blood that surrounds the brain. The movement of the brain within the skull is a lot of what causes concussions.
Thankfully, an amazingly simple solution has been found for this problem; a collar or band around the neck. According to experts, if an athlete were to wear a collar around the neck, about as tight as a tight collar shirt, while playing, they may be saved from getting a concussion. The collar would act like an "airbag"; constricting the neck a little bit narrows the "internal" jugular veins enough to fill up the skull with more fluids and keep the brain from moving.
The collar would be very simple to make and market; as simple as putting cotton balls in the neck guards already used by hockey players. National Hockey League players' usual reluctance to use new equipment means that these collars will probably be introduced to youth hockey leagues first.
One of the researchers, University of Toronto anesthesiologist Dr. Joseph Fisher, wears a set of bent headphones around his neck while riding his bike to compress his internal jugular veins. Lab tests on rats have shown this to help. Fisher says that, like any other theory, the collar idea needs more scientific validation, but there is no downside to wearing a collar. Many Division 1 NCAA football teams have shown interest in collar compression of the jugular vein.
