The Kansas City police department is concerned over a new trend involving deadly crashes that occurred last year. In reviewing thes accident statistics police have found that 29 of the total of 68 deadly accidents were single car wrecks, and of the 29 single car crash deaths, 17 of thoses were attributed to the driver being impaired. The other 12 accidents were classified as "distracted". The total number of deadly accidents in Kansas City is up 3 from 2009.
So, what is causing these single car accidents? Well, there are several possible reasons, but unfortunately it is almost impossible to study these accidents because there are often no witnesses. Obviously, drug or alcohol abuse is easily identified, but according to Police Chief James Corwin in his online blog they are not the cause of the increase.
One concern is the problem of distracted driving. Cell phone calls, texting, GPS devices are all major distractions for drivers today. Traffic investigators often have a hard time discerning whether or not a cell phone call or text is the problem, but there have been cases where a text message time stamp matched the time of impact.
What is more alarming is that nationally traffic deaths are down and at their lowest rate since 1954. The good news is that our local police and traffic investigators are aware of this latest trend and have the opportunity to take a look at these statistics. Police officials are encouraging everyone on the road to remember that driving should be a full-time activity.
