Niner Bikes Recalled by CPSC

Posted on May 14, 2010

Yesterday, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recalled about 750 bicycles due to a faulty design process.  The bikes were designed and marketed by Niner Bikes, a company in North Hollywood, California, but the bikes were manufactured in Taiwan.

These bikes have been declared faulty because they were welded inadequately.  More specifically, the frame of these bikes are beginning to fall apart.  If you look at the aluminum frame of the bicycle, you should be able to see welding lines where each one of the parts of the triangular center meet.  The problem is that these points of welding are not strong enough to withstand too much pressure.  Because these bicycles were welded poorly, the points of welding are beginning to crack open and fall apart.  In most cases, the cracking occurred while the child was riding on the bicycle.  Obviously, if the bicycle were to fall apart while a child was riding on it, i tcould cause a serious injury.  If the child were to lose control and crash into another object or even fall on top of the bicycle, they run the risk of sustaining considerable injuries to the pelvis, legs, arms, skull, thoracic cavity, brain, and other vital organs.

These bikes are called "Jet 9" models.  If you are unsure if your Niner bike is one of these defective bicycles, you can check the serial code which should range between the numbers P8001682 to P9400454.  Additionally, there are three colors available on this bicycle frame--black, green, or white--and it may have "Jet 9" or the "Niner" logo detailed on the frame.  Between the spring of 2008 and the early fall of 2009, these bicycles were sold at various bicycle retail stores nationwide for approximately $1750 each.  To see a picture of the frame and the official CPSC report, click here.

Currently, there have been 53 isolated incidences where the welding on this bicycle was beginning to crack.  But these 53 reported incidences only represent one-fifteenth of the bicycles actually purchased and being used by consumers.  This means that there are many more out there, and the CPSC is urging all consumers to return those bicycles to Niner Bikes Headquarters.  Upon returning the defective bicycle, Niner Bikes will replace the bicycle at no additional cost to the consumer.  Niner Bikes has voluntarily teamed up with the CPSC to work on this recall, and urges parents to discontinue use of this bicycle immediately.  If you do own this bicycle and have noticed that the frame is cracking or if you have been injured as a result of this product breaking, the CPSC wants you to report your incident.  It is important that you report any defective product to the CPSC so they can take the necessary steps to warn the public.  You can report your incident by visiting the CPSC website or calling their hotline: (800)638-2772.  Or you can contact Niner Bikes, by clicking here.

Fortunately, this defective product was caught and warned against before anyone was seriously injured.  But many juvenile accident victims aren't so lucky.  If a child you love has been injured after using a defective product, we urge you to give our law offices a call.  We are dedicated to protecting children, and want to see them get the justice and compensation they deserve.
