Novelty Helmets Preferred by Motorcyclists Despite TBI Threat

Motorcyclists are always looking for a way around state helmet regulations.  One way they've discovered to wear head protection but allow themselves the vision, mobility and ability to hear is by wearing non-regulated helmets, known as novelty helmets.  These helmets are sold in stores but are not regulated by state safety commissions because they put the rider at greater risk of serious traumatic brain injury.

Novelty helmets usually only cover the top of the head and offer no protection to the face or the base of the skull.  A popular model of novelty helmet is the "turtle shell" helmet.  Motorcyclists insist they should be allowed to choose what style of helmet they wear, if they choose to wear one.

Experienced motorcyclists insist that proper motorcycle rider training can prevent serious injury motorcycle crashes and that while training alone will not prevent crashes themselves; if they are involved in a crash, they are going to be vulnerable to serious injury and death, helmet or not.
