Dru S. Glenn of Independence, Mo., is facing charges of elderly abuse after leaving a patient in the car while she went gambling at the Ameristar Casino and Hotel. Glenn, a 27 year old nursing aid, was supposed to be taking the 66 year old woman to a medical appointment instead parked her vehicle on the fourth floor of the parking garage of the casino, where she left the mentally disable woman. Allegedly, she left the windows down slightly and went into the casino, checking on her elderly patient after ten minutes before once again disappearing to gamble, this time for nearly two hours.
Authorities were waiting in the parking lot for Glenn when she returned to her car after her gambling. She admitted to have doing the same thing on other occasions. Glenn has been since fired from her job and faces charges of misdemeanor elderly abuse. It is only a misdemeanor because the elderly woman was not injured as a result of the neglect. If found guilty, she faces a fine and possibly up to a year in jail.
“Luckily she wasn’t seriously hurt,” Clay County Prosecutor Daniel White said in the aftermath. “But it’s unbelievable behavior associated with somebody who’s a state of Missouri employee in charge of helping handicapped individuals.”
The Department of Mental Health has dismissed Glenn from her position, which she held for five years. According to department spokesperson Bob Bax, the dismissal was a necessary action and furthur investigagtion into the matter will continue.
The attorneys at the Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys are happy to know the victim in this case was unharmed. Unfortunately that isn't always the case. We hope actions are taken to help prevent future abuse of elderly patients.
