Operation Prom Night - Keeping your Kids Safe from Auto Accidents

Posted on Apr 15, 2011

Olathe South High School hosted Operation Prom Night in an effort to educate kids about traffic safety.  What was different about this event this year is that one of the speakers, Olathe Fire Captain John Myers, was speaking to the kids from personal experience - not as a firefighter, but as a father.  Captain Myers received the call no parent wants when his son was involved in a tragic crash in December that eventually took his son's life.

This was the first time Myers had spoken to a large group of teenagers about his experience.  Myers took the stage following a simulated crash where firefighters, police officers and some of the school's drama students acted out the chaos of an automobile crash.

Zach Myers, was 16 years old when he was involved in the accident that took his life.  He was in the car with friends, wearing his seat belt in the backseat - the safest place to be in a wreck - when the driver, going twice the legal limit hit another car head-on.  Although the seat belt did its job, all three of the teenagers in the car had backpacks filled with books.  One or more of those backpacks slammed into Zach Myers' head causing major head injuries.  Zach died the day following the accident.

The driver of the vehicle has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and two counts of reckless battery for injuring two others.  He had just gotten his license and was driving a borrowed car when the accident occurred.

After the simulated accident, students, along with Captain Myers, filed into the auditorium.  Myers spoke of the accident while his voice cracked and he cried as he told students of going to the hospital to see his son.  Myers described seeing his son, bleeding with tubes sticking out of his body, in hopes that every student listening will pay attention when driving a car.

Firefighters have worked on this yearly event and have expanded the scope beyond the original prom night drunk driving message.  The facts are frightening.  Traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for 15- to 20-year-olds, and teens are involved in three times as many fatal crashes as all other age groups.  Of course distractions, such as texting, cell phones and simply driving too fast were discussed too.

Teens carry two bags, Myers said, a full bag of luck and an empty bag of experience.

"Hopefully you get enough experience to fill that bag before your luck runs out," he said.
