Overland Park police are taking steps to make the city's streets safer for travelers by cracking down on aggressive drivers. Police are targeting accident-prone areas within the Overland Park city limits and making their presence known by monitoring traffic and issuing tickets to those drivers that are not complying with the law.
The first area targeted was 95th Street and 69 Highway, which, because of road construction, has had more accidents lately. Construction crews have posted a "no right turn on red" sign to alert drivers to a blind spot that does not allow for safe turning at this time. As police monitored that intersection they were surprised to see drivers, one after the other, turn right against the posted sign.
The most accident-prone intersection in Overland Park is I-435 and Metcalf Avenue. According to authorities, driving too fast, following too close and distracted driving topped the list for reasons accidents occur at this intersection.
On Wednesday, police will be monitoring the intersection of 119th and Metcalf, particularly during the lunch hour and the evening rush hour.
The police presence will be noticable and it is hoped that drivers will see police and make better driving decisions. No one wants a ticket, so police are hoping their visibility will slow drivers and make them more aware as they navigate these dangerous intersections.
