Kelly and Kevin Riemann, parents of Daniel Riemann are filing suit against the hosts of a graduation party that was attended by the drunk driver that killed their son in an accident on May 11, 2008. The lawsuit says the hosts of the party allowed Curtis W. Mertensmeyer to drink alcohol at their party, even though Mertensmeyer was only 20 at the time.
Mertensmeyer's vehicle struck Riemann, who was walking on Ward Parkway. Mertensmeyer was sentenced to five years prison time and charged with involuntary manslaughter and leaving the scene of the accident. Mertensmeyer's punishment was then reduced to four months in jail leaving the Riemann family feeling that the wealth and influence of the Mertensmeyer family allowed Curtis Mertenmeyer a punishment that was no more than a slap on the wrist for the death of their son.
Mertensmeyer left the party in his vehicle with passengers Will Borge and Reade Fors when the accident occurred. Borge reported to police that the young men had attended a graduation party at 98th and Holmes prior to the accident. He stated that Mertensmeyer consumed about eight drinks at the party and that Borge was uncomfortable with Mertensmeyer's driving.
The investigation continues with the boys involved as well as the hosts of the party being questioned. The party hosts will not be named unless it is determined they knowingly served alcohol that resulted in the Riemann boys death.
Reimann said the lawsuit is not about money, but about accountability, because no amount of money will bring her son back.
