Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety: Injury Accident Statistics

The U.S. Department of Transportation has recently released statistics from 2009 on pedestrian bicycle accidents. The report indicates that in 2009, there were over 630 cyclists killed nationwide, along with 51,000 injuries in these types of accidents. Cyclists accounted for approximately 2% of all traffic injuries and fatalities in motor vehicle crashes for 2009. The highest percentage of cycling fatalities occurred in urban areas (70%), non-intersections (67%), and between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. (29%).

The U.S. DoT report says that the average age of cyclists killed in 2009 was 39. While many of the victims are adults, children are at risk as well.  Bicyclists under age 16 accounted for 13% of cycling fatalities and 20% of those injured in 2009 motor vehicle crashes.

Be safe.  Prevent serious injury and wear a helmet for safety and no matter if you are a pedestrian, a bicyclist or a motorist, be safe and pay attention to everything on the road around you.
