Monday evening along I-70 at Sterling Avenue was the scene of an accident involving a homeless man and his companion. The pair tried to cross I-70 when one of the men, 40-year-old Andrew L. Mullins, was struck by a vehicle just east of Sterling. Mullins was pronounced dead at the scene and his companion ran off.
The driver, a 39-year-old man from Kingdom City, Missouri who was driving a Ford pickup, stopped and spoke with police following the accident. Police determined the driver was not impaired, and it appeared that he was driving at a normal rate of speed when the accident occurred.
According to authorities, the interstate is next to a shopping center, but there is no fence that separates the highway from the shopping district.
