Recent research shows people who suffer from a brain injury can have sleeping problems later on in life.
Australian researchers studied 23 patients who had suffered brain injuries an average of 14 months earlier. The research concluded: people with traumatic brain injuries produce less melatonin, "a naturally occurring compound found in animals, plants, and microbes. In animals, circulating levels of melatonin vary in a daily cycle, thereby regulating the circadian rhythms", than those without a TBI, causing people with a TBI to have trouble sleeping.
Researchers find that sleep difficulties could lead to depression, rather than depression leading to sleep problems.
