Monday morning a semi bound from Kansas to Iowa crashed on the on ramp from Interstate 435 north to Interstate 35 north. The tractor-trailer was carrying a large cargo, approximately 720 pigs. An estimated 35-40 pigs escaped onto the highway. The driver of the semi, who was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash, was uninjured in the accident.
The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that the truck was coming through the curve too fast causing the truck to fall down the embankment and flip. Another truck was brought in to take the pigs away from the crash scene. Officers reported that getting the loose pigs back onto the truck was a challenge, but felt that the small size of the pigs helped with containing them.
The ramp was closed until just after 2:00 p.m. as crews worked to remove the truck from the highway. Several of the 35-40 pigs died from injuries sustained during the crash.
