Push Around & Whisper Ride Buggies Recalled

Posted on May 12, 2010

The Step 2 Company had to recall one of their most popular products: The Push Around and Whisper Ride Buggies.  These toys are designed for young children and toddlers.  They look like little red cars with animated faces, and are child-sized so children can fit in them and drive around.  Behind the toy is a push pump that kids can use to help propel the small car forward.  The car itself is red, with a yellow compartment in the front, large white eyes that mimic headlights, and has a blue pump in the back.

To date, twenty-eight incidents have been reported where the yellow compartment handle on the front of the toy car has fallen off.  It is believed that children can use this detached part improperly, and consequently, they run the risk of hurting themselves with it.  No critical injuries have been reported at this point in time.  But of the twenty-eight incidents reported, two of the defective push cars caused minor injuries to the children using them.

However, this does not mean that Step 2 is recalling all of these push cars.  The push cars actually come in a variety of colors and styles.  Instead, the company is only recalling the push cars with the yellow compartment handles on the front of the toy.  In total, there are about 2,500,000 defective products being recalled by the company.

The reason why there are so many recalls on one very specific style of push car, is because these child-sized cars were being manufactured for the past eleven years.  From 1999 up until the present, these defective products had been sold in a wide variety of stores and retail shops, and the manufacturer's suggested retail price also ranged from $29 being the lowest, and $59 being the highest.

The Step 2 company is urging parents to take these push cars away from children until the toys can be repaired.  For which, the manufacturer is also providing a repair kit--at no cost--to all consumers.  Contact the Step 2 company to receive your free repair kit.

As parents, we understand that defective products like these are unavoidable.  But we still urge you to make sure that your children are not surrounded by these toys at daycare, at home, or at the homes of friends because the risk is still there, and accordingly, it must be accounted for.  If you have further questions or seek legal assistance, please do not hesitate to pick up the phone and contact one of our Kansas City based attorneys.
