According to new research unveiled by the Journal of Neuropathology and Experimental Neurology, repeated head injuries suffered while playing sports may cause serious and fatal diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Lou Gehrig's disease. The report, released on Tuesday August 24th, shows that while repeated blows to the head my not exactly cause the diseases, the injuries may weaken the brain making the victim more vulnerable to long term brain damage which can then lead to a variety of different dangerous brain illnesses.
The research was conducted by a group of doctors at Boston University Medical Center who studied the effects of brain injuries on athletes who had received multiple head injuries. Three of the athletes now suffer from ALS. In each case of study the athletes have received multiple concussions, including one of them who has aquired ten serious head injuries.
Doctors say more research is need to determine whether or not the head injuries cause the diseases or simply prevent the brain from being able to fight off symptoms.
