Research being conducted at Emory University is showing that a treatment using the female hormone progesterone could in fact show recovery in the brain over time. Progesterone is best known for being a supporting hormone during a pregnancy but can be foundnd in both female and male brains. Professor Donald Stein began his research working on the brains of lab rats. His tests showed many of the rats began to show substantial recovery in brain acitivity. Stein's research suggests that a treatment using progesterone could go further in brain injury recovery than any other advancement in the field.
Dr. David Wright a professor in emergency medicine at Emory University is continuing Stein's research with financial support from the National Institutes of Health. 17 medical centers in 15 states are currently conducting studies using progesterone.
