I-70 in Kansas City, Kansas was the scene of a two vehicle accident involving a semi and a passenger car Monday afternoon around 3:15 p.m. The crash shut down three lanes of I-70 past I-635, but by 4:20, crews had at least one lane cleared.
Rescue crews were faced with extracting both the driver and passenger who were trapped in the car. The driver was quickly removed from the wreck and taken to an area hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Rescue crews had a more difficult time extricating the passenger and were eventually forced to cut the roof off of the car to remove the victim from the vehicle. The passenger was also taken to an area hospital, but his injuries were considered critical. Both the driver and the passenger were men in their twenties. The driver of the semi was not injured.
All lanes of eastbound I-70 were reopened by 4:40. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
